Web Page Content Optimization

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Content is considered to be the king in the world of internet. Therefore the content of the website should be informative and upto date. It is always to have original content on a website which is informative and accurate. Visitors will spend time on the website or webpage if the content is more informative and more attractive than other website. Repeatedly adding new content to the website will always attract visitors and search engines.

Follow the 4 steps mentioned below to optimize the content:

  • Heading Tags: These tags are used to specify the visitors and search engines about the topic of a page is talking about. These are the most important factor for onpage Search Engine Optimization(SEO). There are 6 header tags ranging from <H1> to <H6>. By default these tags appears larger than the standard text in a browser and are bold. These header tags should not be used twice in a single page and never use Cascading Style Sheets(CSS) to mask heading tags.
  • Special Text: Special text is any content on your page that is set to stand out from the rest of the content. The special text is given weight higher than the rest of the text on the page. It can be set as bold, underlined, colored, highlighted, sizing and italic. Search engines are programmed to read this as most important than rest of the content. Always consider not more than 30 – 40 % of the keyword density in the special text.
  • Inline Text Links: These are those links, which are placed in the middle of the text in the verbiage of your content. These links are important because it save space on your website. These are like special characters which serves 2 purposes. First it helps the reader to find the information quickly and easily. Secondly it gives an added weight to the phrases or keywords linked to that page.
  • Keyword Density: Keyword density is the percentage of time a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page. In the context of SEO keyword density can be used as a factor in determining whether a web page is relevant to a specified keyword or keyword phrase. The recommended keyword density is between 4% to 10%.

It is always better to do keyword research to find which keywords are most used in search engine with relevance to your page.

Basics of Pay Per Click: An Advertising Model

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

In this computer world, online business is growing rapidly and has been adopted by many business owners to promote their business. Internet Advertising is one of the most common forms of marketing in these days to promote brands, in which advertisers put their commercials on popular websites or any other relevant website.

PPC (Pay Per Click) is an internet advertising scheme used on websites where advertisers pay their host only when customer clicks their advertisement. PPC Advertising is the placement of ad on the search results page for a specific keyword. Every time a user clicks on the ad, advertiser pays to their host, that is why it is called Pay Per Click. Host sites typically charge a fixed price per click from advertisers, based on the going rate for the respective keyword (based on its popularity).

The most popular PPC Search Engine is Google and their PPC advertising program is Google Adwords. A large number of other search engines also offer PPC Advertising. When a keyword query matches an advertiser’s keyword list, the PPC Search Engine displays the keyword relevant site and that site displays the ad relevant to that keyword.

PPC Advertising is of two types:

  • Flat Rate PPC: In this, the advertiser pays to the host-site a fixed amount for each click for his advertisement. This PPC Model is usually adopted by Shopping Engines, which typically publish rate cards. Generally these rates are minimal and advertiser can pay more for greater appearance (aka impressions). These sites are classified into different categories according to their services or products, for attracting more advertisers.
  • Bid Based PPC: In this model, the advertiser bids for purchasing an ad spot on the publisher’s website with other advertisers in an auction by publisher. The advertisers inform publisher in advance the maximum amount of money they are willing to pay for a given ad spot by using online tools. The bidder (advertiser), whose amount is maximum, succeeds in getting the ad spot on publisher’s website. Every time the advertiser demands to publish the ad on host website, he goes through the bid process.

If you decide to give PPC advertising a try, my advice is that the most typical thing to do is to choose the best host (most relevant to your requirements), for advertising. Best of luck!

Avoid Cloaking – A Black Hat SEO Technique

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Cloaking is a Black Hat SEO Technique by which webmasters present web page to Search Engine’s crawlers or spiders for indexing, but the content presented to crawlers is different from the content shown to website’s visitors.

The purpose to practice Cloaking is basically to deceive Search Engines spiders. So that Spiders index the web page the way Webmaster wants them to be. Cloaking is exercised on the basis of Internet Protocol address (IP address). When the website user is identified as the crawler then server presents a different version of web page, whereas when actual website user is identified then an altogether another variant of web page is offered to view.

In order to get higher & better Search Engine Rankings the webmasters optimize the web page in such a way that Robots index it & acknowledge the web page for superior Search Engine Ranking. The philosophy behind this is the visitors just anticipate that the requested web page provides necessary content. Whether visitor likes or dislikes the content, the web page will not be influenced in terms of ranking.

On the other hand, the content matters when analyzed by the Search Engines Robots. So a particular web page is designed in two ways, one for the robots from SEO viewpoint & second for the website visitors.

Though Cloaking can result into better Search Engine Rankings, but the Search Engines do not appreciate Cloaking. Most probably the website is going to be banned by Search Engines, if it violates the guidelines of Search Engines. So try not to consider Cloaking for optimizing a Website, as Cloaking is more destructive than beneficial.

What are Search Engines & How do they work

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

A Search Engine is basically a Website, which serves as a common platform for gathering and reporting information available on the Internet. World Wide Web is such a vast network that one cannot find each & every desired information with ease.

Without Search Engines, it would be nearly impossible to find desired information on the Web without knowing a specific URL. A web basically shares a collection of HTML documents, as per the request made by the Internet user. The information shared by the Search Engines is already gathered by the Search Engine Robots, which is specifically programmed to analyze & fetch information related to Websites on continuous basis.

Search Engines are of three types, one is automated Robots based, also known as Spiders or Crawlers, second is Human submission based & third is actually the combination of first & second.

Robots or Crawlers based Search Engines, which are supported by the software applications that perform automated tasks with repetitions. Crawlers visit a particular Website, they go through the site & with deep analyses Crawlers gather data. The data gathered is kept reserved in central warehouse, where all Information & Data is collected.

Human submission based Search Engines work on the basis of Information submitted by the humans. The particular Information submitted, only gets Indexed.

So when somebody searches for any kind of Information on the Web with the help of Search Engines, the results shown by the Search Engines are not directly transferred from an intended Website actually. The Website that visitors view are the Indexed contents of Search Engines. The Content in Indexes are kept Live, whether or not Website is active & still gets updated on regular basis.

How does Google Index a Site?

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

First off all we should understand what google does to index your website? Google indexes your websites through bots. Bots are softwares by search engines which go to every page of your site and then analyse the website, categorize it, and then place it into their database.

Google use three types of bots:

  • The Adsense bot
  • The Fresh bot
  • The DeepCrawl bot

The Adsense bot, as the name suggests, is primarily for website which have Google Adsense implemented. This bot is informed of the changes on the website through the integrated javascript code on the website. Upon receiving modification information, the bot comes and indexes the website / web page mostly within 15 minutes, so as to ensure that the page can serve most relevant ads.

The Fresh bot crawls the most popular pages of your website. It doesn’t matter if that is a single page or a thousand pages. Sites like Amazon.com and CNN.com have pages that are crawled every ten minutes, since they make frequent changes on those pages. Since Google knows this, thats why the pages are being crawled everyday. A typical site should expect to have a freshbot visit every 1 to 14 days, depending on the popularity of its pages.

The DeepCrawl bot visits a site and checks all the links found by the Freshbot. DeepCrawl then visits the website and finds all of the deeper links of the site. This is the reason why it can take up to a month for your entire site to be indexed in Google – even with the addition of a Google Sitemap.

So, one needs to be patient and just wait for Google bots to crawl the website and try to add more and more relevant material to the site to ensure it is ranked well.
